Norm Pasley holds one of his newest paintings in front of its subject matter, the Beringer-Caldwell Memorial One-Room Schoolhouse Museum.

GROVE CITY – Longtime Grove City resident Norm Pasley recently donated his painting of Beringer-Caldwell One Room School to the Mercer County Historical Society and Museum.

Pasley presented the painting to MCHS representative Susan Ansell-Provan and Carmela Harnett. The painting brings to life children at play in the schoolyard while the teacher observes. It is a charming portrayal of rural education, typical of Mercer County before more modern facilities took over. The acrylic painting is on a 18-by-34-inch canvas and is estimated to have taken about 16 hours to paint.

At age 71, Pasley is a self-taught artist. He paints because it brings him joy. It has also been his life-long ambition “to paint like grandma used to paint.” It has taken decades of practice and fine tuning his skills, but he feels he has reached his goal.

The istorical society s honored by Pasley’s donation and feels that it is a wonderful addition to the society's’s vast collection of heritage related items. The painting will be on display for public viewing in the main museum at 119 S. Pitt S., Mercer.

The Beringer-Caldwell Memorial One-Room Schoolhouse Museum is an important piece of our local history. It sits at 2159 Mercer Road (Route 58) between Mercer and Greenville across from Delaware Cemetery. The schoolhouse was used as a place of learning from 1880 until it closed in 1960. It is owned and operated by the Mercer County Historical Society. The building is open to the public on Sundays from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Private tours can be scheduled by calling the MCHS administration office at 724-662-3490.
